The Strecker amino-acid synthesis, founded by Adolph Strecker, is a set of chemical reactions that synthesize an amino acid by an aldehyde (or ketone). The aldehyde is condensed with ammonium chloride in the presence of potassium cyanide to give an α-aminonitrile, which is then hydrolyzed to produce the desired amino-acid. In the original Strecker reaction ammonia, acetaldehyde, and hydrogen cyanide combined to give after hydrolysis alanine.
