The Leuckart reaction is the organic reaction of ammonium salts of formic acid with aldehydes (or ketones) to give amines through reductive amination. The reaction is named for the Rudolf Leuckart.
Other than ammonia, primary and secondary amines are also successful. Formamide or substituted formamides can be used in spite of ammonium formate also.
When surplus formic acid is used, the reaction is known as the Leuckart-Wallach reaction. The reaction is named for Rudolf Leuckart and Otto Wallach.
