Industrially, formaldehyde is manufactured by catalytic oxidation of methanol. The most usually used catalysts are silver metal or a mixture of an iron oxide with molybdenum and/or vanadium. In the more generally used Formox process utilising iron oxide and methanol, molybdenium and/or vanadium, and oxygen react at 400°C to yield formaldehyde as per to the chemical equation:
CH3OH + ½ O2 → H2CO + H2O.
