The Cope reaction or Cope elimination, was developed by Arthur C. Cope, is an elimination reaction of an amine oxide to give an alkene and a hydroxylamine. The reaction mechanism includes an intramolecular 5-membered cyclic transition state, proceeding to a syn elimination product. This organic reaction gives the similar result as the Hofmann elimination, but the base is a fraction of the leaving group. The amine oxide is made by oxidation of the corresponding amine with an oxidant like mCPBA. The actual elimination simply needs heat.
