The benzoin condensation is a reaction of two aromatic aldehydes, mainly benzaldehyde. The reaction is catalyzed by a nucleophile like the cyanide anion or an N-heterocyclic carbene. The reaction result is an aromatic acyloin along with benzoin as the parent compound. The catalytic version of the reaction was invented by Nikolay Zinin in the late 1830s, and the reaction mechanism for chemical reaction was developed in 1903 by A. J. Lapworth.
