Anthraquinone, also known as anthracenedione or dioxoanthracene, is an aromatic organic compound with chemical formula C14H8O2. A number of isomers are possible, each of which can be found as a quinone derivative. The term anthraquinone, though, nearly refers to one specific isomer, 9,10-anthraquinone (IUPAC: 9,10-dioxoanthracene) while the keto groups are placed on the central ring. It is a building block of various dyes and is utilized in bleaching pulp for papermaking. It is a yellow crystalline solid, weakly soluble in water but highly soluble in hot organic solvents.
