Alkalinity

The acid neutralizing capacity of water is known as alkalinity. It is due to presence of carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide ions within water. For surface waters alkalinity has been called “The Protector of the Stream”, because the alkalinity of the water resists sudden changes within the pH of the stream related along with the influx of acid deposition, water carry organic acids, industrial wastes or groundwater discharges.
