Cerebellar cortex output

The sole output of the cerebellar cortex is through the Purkinje cells that have their large cell bodies (approx. 50 µm diameter) in the Purkinje cell layer of the cortex. Their widespread dendrites are aligned into a flat plane and are all oriented in similar direction, at right angles to the long axis of the folium in which they are situated. The axons of the Purkinje cells go to the deep cerebellar nuclei. The Purkinje cells use GABA as a neurotransmitter therefore the whole output of the cerebellar cortex is inhibitory.
