Refining

The properties & manufacturing characteristics of ferrous alloys are adversely influenced by the amount of impurities, inclusions, & other elements present. The elimination of impurities is known as refining, much of which is done in melting furnaces or ladles, with the addition of several elements. The cleaner steels having developed and more uniform properties and consistency of composition are increasingly being demanded. Refining is particularly important in generating high- grade steels & alloys for high-performance and critical applications, such as in aircraft. In addition, warranty periods on several machine parts such like, camshafts, shafts, crankshafts for diesel trucks, and other similar parts might be enhanced significantly by using higher-quality steels.

The trend in steel making is for secondary refining in ladles & vacuum chambers. Generally new methods of ladle refining (injection refining) consist in melting & processing in a vacuum. Several methods of heating & re-melting have been introduced for their efficiency and cleanliness. Normally these are used in controlled atmosphere. Some methods are such as: vacuum-arc re-melting, electron-beam melting, argon-oxygen decarburisation, and vacuum are double-electrode re-melting.
