Inductive effects:

Alkyl groups can donate electrons in the direction of a neighboring positive center and this assists to stabilize the ion because some of the positive charge is partially dispersed over the alkyl group. The more alkyl groups that are attached, the greater the electron donating power and much more stable the carbocation.
