Electrophoresis of Proteins
Protein electrophoresis is a technique for analysing the proteins in an extract or a fluid. The electrophoresis may be performed with a small volume of sample in a number of instead ways with or without a supporting medium: SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (in PAGE, short gel electrophoresis, or SDS-electrophoresis, free flow electrophoresis, isotachophoresis, electrofocusing, immunoelectrophoresis, counterelectrophoresis affinity electrophoresis, and capillary electrophoresis). Every technique has several variations with individual limitations and advantages. The Gel electrophoresis is frequent performed in combination with electroblotting immunoblotting to give further information about a specific protein because of practical limitations; protein electrophoresis is commonly not suited as a preparative technique.
