Blending of Surfaces:
Examples and Motivation
Blending surfaces, by providing a smooth connection among various primary or functional surfaces, are extremely common in CAD. Examples include blending surfaces among :
- Fuselage & wings of airplanes
- Propeller or turbine blade and hub
- Bulbous bow and ship hull
- Primary faces of solid models.
Blending (or filleting) surfaces are also by products of manufacturing procedure such as NC milling along with a ball or disk cutter.
As a consequence of continuity conditions, blending surfaces are of higher order, or involve a more complicated formulation than the underlying surfaces to be joined.
