Computation of Bending Stress:

 In the previous section, we have already derived the expression M /I= σ/ y. It might be rewritten as follows:

                                             σ = (M / I )× y

Here, by knowing the bending moment M, the moment of inertia I & the distance y of the point from the neutral axis, we may calculate the bending stress σ at that point. The bending stress at any point is directly proportional to its distance from the neutral axis.
