Proper storage and handling:

Oxygen poses a combustible hazard of a special kind.  While oxygen does not ignite, that lowers the ignition point of flammable substances and greatly accelerates combustion.  That should not be allowed closer than 10 feet to any flammable substance, involving grease and oil, and should be stored no closer than 10 feet to cylinders or tanks holding flammable gases.

Proper storage and handling of containers avoids many possible incidents.  It resulting from the rupture of a cylinder or other vessel containing gas at high pressure is protected against through careful and secure handling of containers at all times.  For instance, cylinders should never be struck nor allowed to fall, since if the cylinder is charged to a high pressure and the cylinder valve is broken off, that could become a projectile.  Cylinders should not be dragged or rolled across the floor; that should be moved through a hand truck.  Also, while they are upright on a hand truck, floor, or vehicle, that should be chained securely to keep them from falling over. Therefore, cylinders should not be heated to the point at that any part of their outside surface exceeds a temperature of 125ºF, and they should never be heated along with a torch or other open flame.   Same precautions are taken along with larger shipping and storage containers. The Initial protection against the possibility of vessel rupture is given through the demanding needs and recommendations which compressed gas containers fulfill in their construction, retesting and testing.
