Speakers and headsets

No amplifier can deliver sound which is better than speakers will allow. Speakers are rated according to audio power they can handle. It is a good idea to purchase speakers which can tolerate at least twice the audio output power which the amplifier can deliver. This will ensure that the speaker distortion will not occur during the loud, low frequency sound bursts.  It will prevent physical damage to the speakers which might otherwise result from the accidentally overdriving them.

Good speakers contain 2 or 3 individual units within the single cabinet. The woofer reproduces bass (low-frequency) sound. The midrange speaker handles the medium and, at times, treble (high) audio frequencies. A tweeter can be designed especially for the enhanced treble reproduction.

Speakers are sometimes called as loudspeakers. This term have nothing to do with the relative volume or the power handling capability of the components.  It probably arose in the early days of the radio, when earphones or headsets were the norm. Com- pared to the output from a typical headset, of course, speakers really are loud.

For the privacy of listening, and to avoid the irritating other people when you really want to blast yourself with some good music, a good pair of headsets is required. Headsets come in at least as many different forms as speakers. In general, they are rated according to how well they reproduce the sound. But this is a subjective consideration. Equally expensive headsets can, and do, exhibit huge differences in quality of sound which they put out. Not only have that, but people often disagreed about what, exactly, constitutes good sound.

If you are buying speakers or headsets, it is a good idea to listen to them in action before you pay the money. With speakers, try to test them under the conditions similar to those in place where they will be employed. Speakers never sound the same in a store as they do in a bedroom or living room.
