Industrial Robots
An industrial robot is a general-purpose, programmable machine possessing assured anthropomorphic characteristics. Mechanical arm is the most common characteristic of an industrial arm and is utilized to perform several industrial tasks. Making decisions, capability to communicate with other machines, and capability to respond to sensory inputs are the significant attributes of an industrial robot. These capabilities permit the robots to be more versatile in nature. This involves the coordinated control of multiple axes (joints) and utilizes dedicated digital computers as controllers.
The several reasons for the commercial and technological significance of industrial robots include the following:
(i) Robots might be substituted for humans in hazardous or uncomfortable work environments. A robot carries out its work cycle with a consistency & repeatability that may not be attained by humans.
(ii) Robots might be reprogrammed. When the production run of the existing task is completed, a robot might be reprogrammed & equipped with essential tooling to perform an altogether different task.
(iii) Robots are controlled by computers and therefore can be associated to other computer systems to attain computer integrated manufacturing.
