Mach Banding:
The problem is made worse by phenomena known as Mach bands. This is a physiological effect whereby the contrast between two areas of a different shade is enhanced as the border between the shades. If you stare closely at the boundary of two neighbouring surfaces in Figure, you may see that the joint appears to be slightly lighter than the surfaces.
