TGA also gives quantitative information on organic compound decompositions and is particularly meaningful for studying polymers. For instance TGA could be used in the determination of the amount of vinyl acetate in copolymers of vinyl acetate and polyethylene. While vinyl acetate is heated it loses acetic acid at about 340 °C. TG curves shown in Figure for various vinyl acetate polyethylene copolymers are clearly denoting the loss of acetic acid at about 340 °C because of the decomposition of vinyl acetate. Every mole of vinyl acetate losses one mole of acetic acid. The amount of vinyl acetate within the polymers could be calculated.
