Subthalamic nucleus

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) lies at the junction among diencephalon and midbrain, and is mainly well developed in primates. It gets excitatory contribution from the motor cortex and GABAergic input from the GPe. The STN neurons employ glutamate as a transmitter, are excitatory, and send their axons mainly to the GPi and SNpr.
