Method of Members:
A statically determinate frame may be solved by using this method. The following steps can be followed for solution of the given frame.
1. Free the frame by applying reaction components. Generally, normal and horizontal components are applied at hinge supports. At roller support one component is applied perpendicular to the support.
2. Draw free body diagram for each of member. The forces at the connecting hinges or pins should be represented with consistency as acting in opposite directions on separated members. If either component of a force is incorrectly supposed in direction, the solution shall give correct magnitude with negative sign. It would mean that the component of force on both separated members acts in opposite direction to that which was originally supposed.
3. Write down two equations for forces and one moment equation for each member. In all, there will be equations equal to three times the number of members.
4. For the statically determinate frames, the total number of equations shall be equal to total number of unknown components of forces.
5. Solve out these equations to determine the desired unknown force components.
