This is a single-stage process in which digestion, sludge thickening and supernatant formation take place simultaneously. The untreated sludge is added to the active digestion zone, where it is heated by an external source. Mesophilic conditions are maintained within the reactor. The resulting gas rises to the surface, carrying oils and grease with it (Figure 2(a)).
