Alkynes:
Alkynes can be synthesized from alkenes by a two-step process that includes the electrophilic addition of bromine to create a vicinal dibromide after that dehydrohalogenation with strong base. The second stage includes the loss of two molecules of hydrogen bromide and thus two equivalents of base are needed.
