Organometallic compounds

Lithium is special in forming molecular alkyls with oligomeric structures, for instance, the tetrameric Li₄(CH₃)₄ (3). Bonding within the 'cubane'-like framework is give through delocalized electrons. These compounds might be prepared by direct reaction among Li metal and alkyl halides and are helpful reagents for preparing organometallic compounds of another element and like options to Grignard reagents in organic synthesis. Organometallic compounds of the other elements create solids with somewhat more ionic character.
