AC Generator Connections:

As display in above Figure, there are six leads from the armature of a three-phase generator, and the outcome is connected to an external load. Within actual practice, the windings are linked together, and only three leads are brought out and linked to the external load.

Two means are available to connect the three armature windings. Within one type of connection, the windings are connected in delta-connected ( ? )or series.

Inside a delta-connected generator a voltage among any two of the phases is known as line voltage that is the similar as the voltage generated in any one phase.  As display in Figure three phase voltages are equivalent, as are the three line voltages.  The current in some line is 3  times the phase current.  You could see in which a delta-connected generator gives an rise in current, but no increase in voltage.

An benefits of the delta-connected AC generator is in which if one phase becomes damaged or open, the remaining two phases could still deliver three-phase power. The capacity of the generator is decreased to 57.7 percent of what it was along with all three phases in operation.

In the other category of connection, one of the leads of every winding is connected, and the remaining three leads are linked to an external load. This is known as a wye connection (Y).

The voltage and current features of the   wye-connected AC   generator are opposite to in which of the delta connection. Voltage among any two lines in a wye- connected AC generator is 1.73 (or√3 ) times some one phase voltage, although line currents are equal to phase currents.  Wye-connected AC generator gives an increase in voltage, other than no increase in current that was display in the below figure.

An benefits of a wye-connected AC generator is in which every phase only has to carry 57.7 percent of line voltage and, thus, could be used for high voltage generation.
