Other Binary Compounds

Sulfides are created through all elements and have structures dissimilar from oxides. Several  MS compounds (that are usually nonstoichiometric) have the NiAs structure. TiS₂ and VS₂ comprise layer (CdI₂) structures, but later disulfides consist of S^2-₂ ions (example FeS₂ with the marcasite and pyrites structures; this is a compound of Fe^II not Fe^IV). The compound CuS is specifically complicated, having apparently Cu^I and Cu^II exist as well as S^2- and S^2-₂ .

Hydrides, nitride and carbides are identified for some of the elements. Some comprise simple stoichiometry and structure, like TiN and TiC with the rocksalt structure. Several are nonstoichiometric along with metallic properties, and some can be considered as interstitial compounds with the nonmetal atom taking place sites among metallic atoms in the general elemental structure.
