Other Binary Compounds
Sulfides are created through all elements and have structures dissimilar from oxides. Several MS compounds (that are usually nonstoichiometric) have the NiAs structure. TiS2 and VS2 comprise layer (CdI2) structures, but later disulfides consist of S2-2 ions (example FeS2 with the marcasite and pyrites structures; this is a compound of FeII not FeIV). The compound CuS is specifically complicated, having apparently CuI and CuII exist as well as S2- and S2-2 .
Hydrides, nitride and carbides are identified for some of the elements. Some comprise simple stoichiometry and structure, like TiN and TiC with the rocksalt structure. Several are nonstoichiometric along with metallic properties, and some can be considered as interstitial compounds with the nonmetal atom taking place sites among metallic atoms in the general elemental structure.
