Q. Write short notes on Bulking of Sand?

Volume of sand fluctuates with variations in moisture content when sand is wet then each particle sets coating of water due to surface tension which keeps them apart thereby causing an increase in the volume to the sand . This increase in volume to the sand being wet is known as bulking of sand. Bulking increases gradually with the increase in moisture content. At 5% moisture content by weight and increase in volume is about 18 to 39%. It then decrease with the increase in moisture till it become zero when the water is more then 20%.
