Q. What are the functions of glucagon and insulin for the blood glucose control?
Glucagon increases insulin and glycemia reduces it. They are antagonistic pancreatic hormones. Glucagon acts stimulating glycogenolysis and therefore forming glucose from glycogen breaking. Insulin is the hormone that is accountable for the entrance of glucose from the blood into the cells.
When glycemia is low for instance during fasting insulin is inhibited and glucagon is secreted. When glycemia is high as after the meals and there are more secretion of insulin and inhibition of glucagon.
