Avoid Misusing Modifiers

In theory, modifiers-adjectives and adverbs-should make your writing more precise. After all, they tell us what kind, how much, and in what manner. In practice, however, writers too often rely on them to shore up nouns or verbs that seem weak. This leads to wordiness, and often dulls rather than heightens words' effects.
