Why do most of plants present opposite phyllotaxis?

The Phyllotaxis is the way that leaves are arranged on shoots. Most of plants have opposite phyllotaxis that (alternating in sequence, one in one side of the shoot, the following in the opposite side) as a solution to prevent self shading of the leaves thus improving the efficiency of photosynthesis.
