When and where did the Civil War end-US war?
When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office to begin his second term in March 1865, the war was nearly over. Grant's army beat Lee's repeatedly, chasing the Confederates across Virginia and forcing the them to abandon their capital at Richmond. On April 9, recognizing that his army was nearly surrounded and low on supplies, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. Over the next few days, other Confederate commanders also lay down their arms. On May 10, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia.On April 14, only days after Lee's surrender, Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter, while attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington. The president died the following morning, to be succeeded by Vice President Andrew Johnson. Booth fled but was captured in a barn in Virginia on April 26.
