What is the important role of Vitamin K
Vitamin K, as you may already know, is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting. It was first observed in 1934 by Dam and Schonheyder that bleeding in chickens that was unrelated to vitamin C deficiency could be prevented by alfalfa or decayed fish meal effectively. It was possible to extract the active principle with ether and named as vitamin K by Dam in 1935. Dam, Karrer and co-workers isolated pure vitamin K1 in 1939 and in the same year, Doisy and co-workers isolated pure vitamin K2. Immediately after this, synthesis of the vitamin was accomplished by three different groups of workers.
