What is Slope of a Line ?

A line can have a "steep" slope or a "gradual" slope.

slope = rise/run
The "rise" is the distance going up or down. The "run" is the distance going left or right.

The slope of a line which passes through points A (x1, y1) and B (x2, y2) is given by the formula:

Slope = y2-y1/x2-x1

4 Types of Slopes

1. When the slope = 0, the line is a horizontal line.
2. When the slope has 0 in the denominator, the slope is undefined. The line is a vertical line.
3. When the slope is positive, the line climbs up to the right.
4. When the slope is negative, the line falls down to the right.

Slope-intercept Form :  One way to write a linear equation is y = mx + b, called slope-intercept form, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept. The y-intercept is where the line crosses the y-axis.
