Q. What is Reverse Cholesterol Transport?
HDL is involved in reverse cholesterol transport whereby cholesterol surplus to cellular requirements is returned from the periphery to the liver for excertion. HDL can act as an acceptor for free cholesterol from tissues.
Cholesterol ester transfers from HDL to lipoproteins of lower density such as VLDL and LDL via CETP. Thus the major part of cholesterol ester formed within HDL returns to the liver in other lipoproteins.
