During the refractory period, sodium channels are inactivated and cannot be opened by depolarization. Like 'temporary' inactivation mechanism has evolved and ensures:

a. The sodium channel has ample time to revert to its 'resting state' conformation.

b.   The action potential travels unidirectionally.

c. Na+,K+-ATPase has sufficient time to pump Na+ out.
