Post Myocardial Infarction Ventricular Septal Defect (Septal Rupture)
The correct terminology is septal rupture as the defect formed is not a direct through and through defect, but irregular a result of necrosed muscle. It is most common after anteroseptal myocardial infarction. The location is 60 per cent anterior and 40 per cent posterior. A posterior septal rupture is often associated with mitral regurgitation. The incidence in patients who are thrombolysed has come down to 0.2 per cent from a previously quoted 2 per cent. It may occur within two days of MI or as late as two weeks.
