Microtubules are the largest intracellular fibers, with a diameter of about 25 nm (2.5 x 10-8 meters). They consist of hollow fibers composed of a protein called tubulin. Specialized microtubules, called spindle fibers, separate the chromosomes in cell division. Microtubules are also thought to have the important function of maintaining the shape of the cell and the organization of cell contents.
