What is HMP pathway? Give any two points of its significance
The HMP is an alternate oxidative pathway for the metabolism of glucose. The significance of the pathway is that NADPH is utilized for the synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol, steroids and also in the synthesis of amino acids via glutamate dehydrogenase outside the mitochondria. Lipogenesis also posses the pentose sugars produced in HMP shunt are utilized for the synthesis of nucleic acids and nucleotides, and CO,, produced in this pathway, is used for the synthesis of fatty acids and purine bases.
