What does ODBC do in context with PHP?

PHP supports many databases such as dBase, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, etc. however, it also supports databases such as filePro, FrontBase and InterBase with ODBC connectivity. ODBC stands for Open Database connectivity that is a standard which allows user to communicate with other databases such as Access and IBM DB2.
