Sometimes both electrons in the shared pair come from one atom. This type of bond is called a dative covalent bond.

For example, in the ammonium ion (NH4+) a dative bond occurs between the hydrogen ion (H+) and nitrogen atom. Here, the nitrogen atom supplies both of the electrons of the covalent bond:
