What are the uses of construction of a retaining wall?

The retaining wall is constructed whenever space requirement do not allow the natural slope to be formed for an excavation. Such conditions may arise when a roadway or storage area is needed immediately adjacent to an excavation and the retaining wall forms a permanent wall of the excavation. Let us see how a wall is constructed. A temporary slope is formed at the edge of excavation and the wall is built as in figure. Then the backfill is dumped into the space between the wall and the temporary slope. For gravity walls, masonry or concrete is used.  Reinforced concrete is used for cantilever and counter fort retaining walls. Reinforced earth walls are now widely used in developed countries.
