What are the steps to the scientific notation?

To write in scientific notation, you should first move the decimal point of the number to where the number is among 1 and 9. For example, change 567 to 5.67. Then count the number of places you moved the decimal. If you moved it left then the number will positive. If you moved it right then the number will negative. Finally times the number with the decimal point by 10 to the power of the number the decimal moved.

Example: 500000 --> 5.00000 --> over 5 --> 5 x 105
