What are the main sources of European Law?
There are three main sources of EU (European) law:
a. Primary legislation:
It is the Treaties of Rome and Paris that initially created the Community, and such treaties have been revised in the Treaty of Maastricht.
This imposes rights and obligations onto all member states.
b. Subordinate legislation:
In this source, three sub-sources are also involved,
• Regulations
• Directives
• Decisions
c. European Court of Justice rulings
The House of Lords was the last court of appeal till the UK joined the EC and currently the European Court of Justice is the highest court.
