Assignment Help:

What are the approaches to the design of retaining walls?

The approach to the design of retaining walls can be started as follows:

a. Chosse a trial dimension of the wall

b. Find out the active thrust against the wall

c. Find out the sliding resistance at the base of the wall due to the weight of the wall and the soil

d. Find out the passive resistance at the toe of the wall

e. Varify whether the resistance exceeds the active thrust whether the resisting moment exceeds the overturning moment, and whether tension is created in any horizontal section of the wall. Adopt suitable factors of safety.
