What are the advantages of polymer fibers optics?

The spectral transmission of PMMA fibers is not easy to enhance upon, the quality of the light transmitted over distances longer than four or five meters is considerable fine that the standard glass fibers. Cost is other factor; polymer fibers consist of a lower cost per optical area unit than glass, in part because of the easier manufacturing procedure. High quality PMMA systems rely upon a fusion process to construct the common ending, therefore dispensing with the utilization of epoxy potting compounds.  In all illustrations where the use of several fibers or light points is prescribed polymer systems is a superior option. The other point to bear in mind is that the weight factor: glass fibers are heavier than polymer, a fact which may be critical in some applications, like aircraft and automotive uses.
