A backhoe is intended primarily for excavation below ground and it is particularly employed for trench excavation works. It digs by forcing bucket into soils and pulling it in the direction of machine and it possesses positive digging act and precise lateral control.
A shovel is a machine that does something like a man's digging action with a hand shovel and hence it is describe a shovel. It digs by putting bucket at toe of excavation and pulling it up.
