Q. What are advantages and disadvantage of varnishing?

Varnish is a clear pale solution of a resinous substance ( like amber, common resin, copal, lac, or shellac 0 dissolved in either oil turpentine or alcohol. The solution on drying forms a hard, transparent glossy film on the varnished surface plays an important role in finishing wooden surface of doors windows floors etc.

Advantage -

i. Varnish is applied on unpainted furniture and other wood work to decorate the surface with out hiding the beautiful grain of wood and to protect the surface against the adverse influence of the atmosphere.

ii. Painted surface are varnished to enhances the appearance of the paint and the increase the durability of the paint film.

Disadvantage -

It is not durable due to it should not water resistance.
