Uses of Acetylene

(a) Acetylene is utilized as an illuminant.

(b) It is utilized for the production of oxy-acetylene flame. The high temperature of the flame is above. Is utilized for cutting and welding of metals.

(c) It is utilized for artificial ripening of fruits.

(d) It is utilized as a general anaesthetic under the name naracylene.

(e) It has synthetic applications. It offers as a starting material for the manufacture of a large range of substances.

(f) On electrical decomposition acetylene generates finely divided carbon and hydrogen. Hydrogen is required in airships.
