TYPICAL JOINT DESIGNS THAT ARE USED IN ELECTRON BEAM WELDING
Butt joint: Butt joint is the preferred joint as it involves only a small amount of machining prior to welding.Butt joint with internal centering: Joint has an internal centre machined so that tooling I fixturing is simplified.Butt joint with external centering: Joint has an external centre machined. Again this allows for ease of location. The lip also serves another function when a full penetration weld is required; it acts as a filler.Butt joint with centering lip: In this joint, the lip performs the function of centering the component.Butt joint with self backing material: This type can also suffer from corrosion, if the back of the joint is not machined.Butt joint as used in partial penetration welds: This type of joint is normally found when only partial penetration is required. However, this type of joint should not be used if the joint is likely to be exposed to corrosive atmospheres / media.
