This study explored the relationship of principal as well as teacher and what principals can do to address the critical issue of teacher retention. More exactly, it investigated the relationship between the actions of the building principal as well as a teacher's decision to continue in his or her school, or move to another school. The study addressed the subsequent question- What principal behaviors as well as the resulting working conditions do teachers identify as influencing their choice to stay in their current school or move to another school?

Specific investigations were made into the perceptions of teachers regarding the degree of influence that work condition factors controlled in part by the building principal have on a teacher's decision to move from one school to another or to continue in the same school. Exactly the work condition factors of Teacher Collaboration, School Environment, Administrative Support, Work Assignment, Work Reward and Accountability were examined to determine the relationship between experiencing the factors and the level of significance the factors have in a teacher's decision to either remain in their school or move to another school. Participants in this study comprised teachers who have moved from one school to another (movers) as well as teachers who have remained in the school that hired them (stayers).

The research appraised 214 teachers in twelve large Wisconsin high schools to identify factors influencing a teacher's decision to move to another school or stay in their current teaching assignment. The survey intensive on gathering information about work conditions within the control of the principal that influence a teacher's decision to keep in their current school or move to a new school. Of the 214 teachers, 143 were movers and 71 were stayers.
This study decided that School Environment, Administrative Support, Teacher Collaboration, Work Assignment and Work Rewards influence a teacher's decision to stay or move. The findings suggest that high school principals necessity to establish a collaborative partnerships among staff, school culture that includes supportive relationships, students and parents and a school community that recognizes and values the important work that teachers do in order for students to achieve and be successful. Teachers not experiencing the support of the principal, a meaningful work assignment, a positive school climate, support from colleagues and rewards to recognize their work are likely to look elsewhere to teach.

This study donates to the research pertaining to teacher retention and mobility. The findings of this study are envisioned to aid principals in better understanding how they can address as well as impact change in the organization they lead in order to improve the level of teacher retention in their building.
