The International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a legal opinion on the legality of nuclear weapons, which says that the threat or use of force by means of nuclear weapons may be legal in extreme circumstances of self-defence.  Though,  it  would  generally  be  contrary  to  the  rules  of international law applicable in  armed conflict, and in  particular the  principles and rules of humanitarian law. The decision of ICJ did not outlaw nuclear war, and so many say it in fact legitimized use of nuclear weapons.
